Alpine Skiing
Coaches: Scott Davis, Scott Cushing
Last year’s record: Boys placed a skier on the podium every race and consistently earned other top-20 finishes; girls won one meet and consistently placed racers on the podium/in the top five.
Key skiers lost: Paige Davis
Key returners: Logan Davis, Ali Vogel
Key newcomers: Zach Vogel, Reannah Dingley, Emily Rock
Key matchups: “The Western Maine Conference is one of the toughest conferences in the State and we see every team at least once a week, so we always have to be at the top of our game to win,” Davis says.
Outlook: “Ski racing results can change drastically from one race to the next,” Davis says, “and we hope that hard work and dedication will allow us to be consistent in our finishes and win a few meets.” On the boys’ side of things, Logan Davis should pick up where he left off last season – as a leader. Zach Vogel joins the roster after a successful middle school career and will likely have an immediate impact on both the individual and team results. The Gentlemen Lakers look forward to one of their best seasons in recent years. Meanwhile, the girls team will work to recover from the loss of Captain and multiple-WMC-Championship-winner Paige Davis. Ali Vogel ably takes the helm for the Lady Lakers this time around. Dingley’s love for the sport will buoy her teammates, and Rock’s competitiveness will keep opponents on their toes.
Boys Basketball
Coaches: Ryan Martin (head), Alex Langadas (asst.), Ken Martin (asst.)
Last year’s record: 4-14
Key returners: Evan Willey, Isaac Holland, Derek Langadas, Noah Duprey, Liam Grass
Key newcomers: Jacob Stone, Ethan McMurray, Reuben Dyer
Key matchups: Wells
Outlook: “We have a young, energetic, athletic team with size,” Martin says. “A team that will look to pressure the ball and force turnovers on the defensive end, and try to push the ball and get quick baskets on the offensive end.”
Girls Basketball
Coach: Paul True
Last year’s record: 6-12
Key players lost: Brooke Harriman
Key returners: Shauna Hancock, Elle Hall, Liz Smith, Bella Ruso, Nevaeh Stewart, Shelby Sheldrick
Key newcomers: Melissa Mayo
Key matchups: “Every game,” True says.
Outlook: “The Lakers will be young,” True says, “but will compete in a very tough WMC. Look for the Lakers to play an up-tempo game and get better as the season rolls along.” True’s team finished well below .500 last year, but were even younger then; in fact, they probably did better than their experience level warranted. This year, then, they should be even more of a threat. Expect them to pull out some impressive triumphs.
Boys Hockey (a co-op with Fryeburg and Oxford Hills)
Coach: Dave Lepage
Last year’s record: 4-14
Key returners: Bobby LeBlanc (sr., G); Cam Lepage (sr., D); Jake Domegan (sr., D); Ed Thurston (jr., F); Colby Turcotte (jr., F); Will Galligan (jr., F); Bryce Micklon (jr., D)
Key newcomers: Boden Dock (jr., F); Dom Zimmel (jr., G)
Key matchups: “Any Class A game that allows us to see where we stand in the rankings,” Lepage says.
Outlook: “Although we struggled last year with some scoring consistency, we were very young to be playing at the varsity level,” Lepage says. “Good numbers this year will help with our balance and skating depth. We shouldn’t be counting on just a few players to score and are looking to increase our wins from last year. Our schedule is tougher but with the addition of a large number of freshmen, we look to see who’ll work hard enough to earn varsity ice time. Higher numbers means a higher tempo at practice and a good, healthy, competitive level all around. We have worked hard on team speed and I am hoping that will help us as we get deeper into the season.”
Indoor Track & Field
Coaches: Mark Snow, Dana Caron
Last year’s results: Boys 17-12, girls 9-19
Key athletes lost: Tim Moore, Jarod Maher, Emily Colson
Key returners: Nick Peterson, Nate Casali, Erik Christiansen, Mackenzie Siebert, Leah Plummer, Kaitlyn Plummer, Julia Murch
Key newcomers: Jeff McCubrey
Key matchups: Fryeburg
Outlook: “Seibert, Plummer and Casali are the athletes with individual State Meet experience,” Snow says; “they should lead the team in points. A .500 record by either team would be a surprise – thus we can focus on learning the events, setting personal bests and having fun.” Snow picks Fryeburg as a key matchup simply because the Lakers like competing with the Raiders.
