An unorganized storm system will slide through the Northeast late Thursday into Friday. Mild air will precede it leading to mostly rain, but cold air will bleed into the night, changing rain to snow before it tapers off.
Accumulations will be small, but many will see their first snow of the season and roads will get a little slick late tonight and Friday morning.
Rain will spread in Thursday afternoon and become steady through the early evening. Driving home from work in the dark will be slow, especially with the wet roads.
Things get more interesting later in the evening. Colder air will get drawn into the storm and the rain/snow line will work down to the coast, changing rain to snow before it ends around midnight.
The window for snow won’t be big, only an hour or two, not enough for significant accumulations. But, enough for slushy and slippery ones.
I’m actually concerned for Friday morning’s commute. Not for falling snow or rain, but for refreezing and black ice.
The storm will be long gone by morning but temps will drop quite a bit during the pre-dawn hours and we’ll all be below freezing by sun-up and the commute. Slick and icy spots are likely, so be super careful.
