Hartford, Conn. — The Bowdoin College women’s volleyball team bounced back from a first set loss to dominate Trinity in the final three sets of a 3-1 victory on Friday night.

The Polar Bears improved to 4-2 in NESCAC action. 

The Bantams won the first set before the Polar Bears came alive to completely dominate in a final score of 21-25, 25-10, 25-6, 25-13.

Trinity claimed the first set thanks to a 6-1 run to close out the Polar Bears. Bowdoin answered with a 16-2 run to open the second set en route to tying the match and then rolled off its most lopsided set win of the year in the third, taking an 8-0 lead and never looking back in a 25-6 triumph that gave them a 2-1 overall edge.

The Polar Bears put the Bantams away in the fourth, taking a 14-3 lead out of the gate and cruising the rest of the way.

Ashley Williams led the balanced Bowdoin attack with 14 kills, with Caroline Flaharty adding nine kills and four aces.

Bowdoin also picked up a 3-1 win over the Coast Guard at New London, Connecticut, on Saturday. 

The Polar Bears captured the match with scores of 26-28, 25-12, 25-23, 25-23 to improve to 9-7 overall. Bowdoin has won six straight matches and hosts Endicott this upcoming Friday inside Morrell Gymnasium at 6 p.m. 

Field hockey

Bowdoin cruised to a 5-0 NESCAC win at Connecticut College on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (10-1, 6-1 NESCAC) got a pair of goals from Kara Finnerty, with three other individuals chipping in. 

The Camels slipped to 2-8 (0-7 NESCAC).

Peyton Jackson put Bowdoin on the board just 1:19 into action. Abby Bashaw spun at the top of the circle and made a reverse stick pass to Jackson on the left. Jackson blasted a drive into the far corner for a 1-0 lead.

Bowdoin doubled its lead in the 13th minute as Finnerty drove a shot on pads from the top of the circle, with the ball sneaking through a scrum to the right post. Emma Stevens pushed the ball over the goal line.

Finnerty scored back-to-back goals midway through the second quarter.

Elizabeth Growney had her first of the game eight minutes into the third quarter, cleaning up a ball on the left post late on a penalty corner.

Bowdoin held a 19-2 shot advantage and 6-1 edge in corners.

The Polar Bears host Husson Thursday at 7 p.m.

Women’s tennis

Bowdoin enjoyed an extremely successful weekend at the Bowdoin Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

The Polar Bears closed out their fall campaign with the tournament, where they won the doubles bracket as well as the B and C singles divisions.

Kennedi Carter and Tasha Christ won the A-doubles bracket, picking up a pair of easy wins in the early rounds before ousting a Skidmore duo, 8-7, in the semifinals. They then defeated another Skidmore pairing in the finals, 8-4.

Carter and Fleming Landau both advanced to the finals of the B-bracket without losing a set. 

In the C-singles division, Christ advanced to the finals against teammate Morgan Hall as both players didn’t lose a set in the opening rounds. Christ took the final in a pair of tiebreakers, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3).

Cross country

The Polar Bear women finished ninth, while the men took 15th at the Open New England Championship on Saturday at Franklin Park.

In a field that included numerous Division I squads, the Polar Bear women were the second Division III squad among 22 teams, while the men were the top Division III team in a field of 25.

Bowdoin’s Caroline Shipley was the top finisher in the women’s meet for the Polar Bears, taking 17th place in a time of 18:21.4 to establish a personal-best time in the 5K. Delaney Bullock ended in 36th place overall (18:45.6) for Bowdoin, while Leila Trummel took 62nd spot (19:17.9). 

For the Bowdoin men, the top five runners all posted personal-best times on the 8K course. Leading the way for the Polar Bears were Luca Ostertag-Hill in 51st (26:04.4) and Andrew Meredith in 52nd (26:04.6).

The Polar Bears will enjoy a week off before returning to action by hosting the Bowdoin Invitational II at Pickard Fields on Oct. 26.

Football

Amherst held Bowdoin scoreless in the first half of a 36-14 victory on Saturday afternoon.

The Mammoths improved to 4-1, while the Polar Bears fell to 0-5.

Amherst opened up a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter by capping a five-play, 63-yard drive with a 9-yard pass to the back corner of the end zone from Ollie Eberth to Luke Mallette. 

The Mammoths increased their lead with a fumble recovery for a touchdown with just 27 seconds left in the quarter. The Mammoths added a second quarter safety and a 12-yard touchdown run by Eberth to give themselves a 22-0 edge at the break.

After a third quarter touchdown by Amherst, Bowdoin got on the board on the first play of the fourth quarter as Nate Richam-Odoi plunged in from 2-yards out to end a 10-play, 75-yard drive. The big play came on a 41-yard pass play from Matthew Marcantano to Gregory Olson.

After another Amherst score, Bowdoin posted a long drive for the final score of the game, covering 77 yards in 13 plays with Richam-Odoi scoring his second touchdown of the day from 10-yards out to make.

Eberth threw for 261 yards as the Mammoths racked up 387 yards of total offense.   

Richam-Odoi totaled 106 yards on 23 carries to become the first Polar Bear to rush for more than 100 yards in three straight games since the institution of NESCAC play in 2000. Marcantano threw for 140 yards for the Polar Bears, with five catches and 65 yards going to Olson.

Joe Gowetski made nine tackles, including two for a loss, while Alex Tyson recorded two sacks.

Bowdoin plays its final game outside the state of Maine on Saturday at Tufts. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. 

Women’s soccer

Bowdoin scored the game’s first goal, but the Connecticut College Camels came back to win, 2-1, on Saturday.   

The Polar Bears are 4-6-1 (1-5-1 NESCAC). The Camels climbed to 9-2 (4-2 NESCAC).

Bowdoin scored quickly, converting just 2:19 into the game. Beginning with a goal kick, the Polar Bears worked the ball down the field. Morgen Gallagher soon fed Jamie Lau for the 1-0 lead.

Connecticut College answered just over a minute later to tie the game.

The hosts took the lead 10 minutes into the second half off an unassisted mark from Mya Johnson.

Bowdoin was unable to muster a shot in the second half.

Penny Rocchio made three saves in the Bowdoin cage.

The Polar Bears host Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Men’s soccer

The Polar Bears fell, 1-0, in overtime to host Connecticut College on Saturday.

The Polar Bears (5-2-4, 1-2-4 NESCAC) saw an eight-game unbeaten streak come to an end. The Camels are 6-1-2 (3-1-2 NESCAC).

The two teams traded shots in the opening half, with the Camels holding an 8-4 down the stretch. Liam Noonan came close to breaking the game open in the 33rd minute, ringing a shot off the crossbar.

Connecticut College ramped up the pressure further with 13 shots in the second frame. The Camels earned a corner kick on the left side with under a minute remaining in the regulation and the game tied 0-0. The ball dropped into play, was deflected towards the right of the box, and then back into danger. Bowdoin’s back line cleared the threat away and sent the game to overtime.

Noonan carried down the left side in overtime and made his way to the end line for a long flat cross to MT Tshuma at the far post. Tshuma one-touched the ball into the net for a 1-0 overtime win.

Connecticut College owned a 22-7 shot advantage. The Camels had a 9-1 corner kick edge.

Michael Webber made nine saves to keep the Polar Bears in the game.

The Polar Bears travel to Thomas on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game.
