GARDINER — A mail-order pharmacy whose product killed two racehorses this year has been suspended by Maine regulators.
The state’s Board of Pharmacy voted unanimously Thursday to suspend the license of Rapid Equine Pharmacy LLC for 30 days.
The board found the pharmacy to be “knowingly or negligently facilitating the diversion” of drugs to horses without prescription.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Rapid created 84 batches and distributed six tubes of medication meant to treat a parasite to a veterinarian who distributed two of those tubes to two horses in May.
Both horses suffered from a neurological disease less than 24 hours after receiving the medication and were euthanized.
Rapid says in a statement it takes the board’s decision “very seriously” and is taking action to correct the issues.
