Editor,
It’s got to stop. Recently, a friend of our family, was verbally abused by some 20-somethings while shopping at the local grocery market in Kennebunk.
He is a family man with a wife and three beautiful kids, who is studying law while working at another job, so he is a busy guy. Oh, by the way, did I mention that he is black and the verbal abuse was monkey noises from this crowd of bigots.
The underbelly of racism exists right here where we pride ourselves in being so “accepting.”
May I suggest to all of us that when we see this kind of behavior we call it out for what it is.
It is intimidating, it is bullying and it is unacceptable.
It needs to stop.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
