PORTLAND — Councilors Belinda Ray and Justin Costa are moving forward with plans to put municipal clean elections and ranked-choice voting questions on the ballot for the March 2020 presidential primary election.
“We’ve been very clear in saying we want to give voters the chance to vote on these issues, and we’re actively working with Corporation Counsel to prepare these charter amendments for an upcoming Council meeting,” Costa said.
Fair Elections Portland, the group pushing for the clean elections referendum, filed a lawsuit in Cumberland County Superior Court against the city on Sept. 20 for refusing to recognize a clean elections ballot initiative.
According to a release from the city, it is possible the outcome of that suit will not ultimately help move the questions forward, and Ray and Costa want to ensure they are included on the March ballot.
