KENNEBUNK — The York County Retired Educators Association will continue the tradition of sponsoring a fall fair after taking a few years off.
The fair had been held for nearly 20 years previously, providing money for its scholarship fund. It will be held at the Middle School of the Kennebunks, a change of venue from previous years. Besides a new location, there are a few other changes.
The fair will be held earlier in the fall, on Saturday, Oct. 26 and the group hopes that it will stand out from all of the other fairs that are held in the busy November fair season. Also, any profits made by YCREA, with the exception of the 50/50 raffle, will go to Caring Unlimited, a domestic violence program for York county.
A raffle will benefit the YCREA scholarship fund. A small group of YCREA members (Shirley Jones, Rosemarie Smith, Sharon LeBlanc, Ute Stevens, and Mariene Benoit) have been going to Atria (an assisted living facility) in Kennebunk for the past two years, forming a Yarn Circle with some of the residents.
The fair will offer knitting and crocheting items such as scarves, hats, and afghan squares. for a number of charitable organizations and the group will work together to make handcrafted items for the fair this fall, adding them to the craft table from its membership.
The fair will have some of the familiar events, including a used book sale, a baked goods table, and a 50/50 raffle. YCREA will also host a lunch which is always a big hit. And it has introduced a new raffle, a basket raffle that will feature themed baskets such as: a Red Sox basket, an Italian dinner basket, a snowman basket, and a car emergency basket.
YCREA will also fill the gym with outside crafters and will accept crafter applications until Sept. 30. The cost is $30 for a space that is 10 feet wide and 6 feet deep. Tables and electricity will be available for an extra charge of $5 each. For an application, please contact Rosemarie Smith. Email: (rosietomorrow25@gmail.com) or phone (680-0342).
Be sure to save the date: Saturday, Oct. 26 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to get a jump on your holiday shopping and support Caring Unlimited, a great community organization.
