SPRINGVALE – Two people were seriously injured Saturday night in Springvale when the Kia Forte  they were in hit the guardrail and left the roadway. Police said the vehicle collided with several trees and rolled onto its side.

The vehicle was heading north on Route 109 toward Shapleigh when the crash took place in an area known as the “S” curve around 7 p.m., said Sanford Deputy Police Chief Tim Strout.

The passenger sustained incapacitating injuries and was  transported by LifeFlight of Maine to Maine Medical Center in Portland, said Strout on Monday. The passenger’s name has not been released.

The driver of the Kia, Hunter Penley, 23, of North Berwick, was taken to Maine Medical Center by Sanford Fire Department ambulance.

Strout said witnesses have said the vehicle was operating erratically – veering from side to side on the roadway.

The crash remains under investigation, he said.

“No cause has been established at this point,” said Strout.

He said an accident reconstruction expert from Cumberland County was called in Saturday evening.

No charges have been filed.

Route 109 was closed for a time Saturday night as emergency personnel and police worked at the scene.
