SOUTH PORTLAND — The Aug. 14 Mill Creek Summer Concert ended the six-week season and brought together a crowd of about 350 for a night of Beatles hits performed by Studio Two.

The Beatles tribute band played a range from the Beatles’ core catalog, from the feel-good pop rock of “A Hard Day’s Night” to experimental White Album hits.

Singer Stephen Murray, who plays John Lennon in Studio Two, said the venue was great and, the audience, fantastic.

“It was quite a large crowd,” Murray said. “Lots of singing and dancing.”

Murray said the band has played in Maine more than 100 times, and this is their fifth time at Mill Creek.

“This was definitely our biggest audience this summer,” Summer Recreation Manager Robert Carter said. “The Beatles are a popular band, and Studio Two has a big local following, because they do so much in southern Maine.”

Carter said most of their summer concerts draw crowds of about 150 to 250 people.

The Delta Knights, who played in late July, are also a crowd favorite, according to Carter.

“They’ve played with us for over a dozen years,” Carter said. “And they typically attract between 300 and 400 people.”

Bands are chosen by the Department of Recreation based on multiple factors, such as past performance in Mill Creek, and performance turnout.

“We also spend a lot of the winter reaching out to bands that are either suggested to us or that someone from our department sees somewhere,” Carter said.

The Hickory Horned Devils played the park on Aug. 7. The band is from southern New Hampshire and was suggested by Deputy Director Karl Coughlin after he saw them last summer in Vermont.

The Mill Creek Summer Concert Series will return next year. The Department of Recreation and Studio Two both said that Studio Two should be back in the park in 2020.
