SANFORD – Two more candidates have emerged for the Nov. 5 race for Sanford City Council, ahead of the Sept. 5 deadline for nomination papers.
So far, four people have pulled nomination papers for two, three-year city council terms – all are either currently serving or have done so in the past.
Former city councilors Dianne Connolly and Fred Smith are in the running, as are incumbents Robert Stackpole and John Tuttle.
As of Tuesday, Smith, who previously served two terms, was the only one of the four who hadn’t turned in their papers – but he said he intends to do so.
Smith said he’s not seen as conservative a voice on the council since he chose not to run for re-election when his term expired a year ago.
Connolly, a member of the Sanford Planning Board, served on the city council during the last six months of 2014, when she was appointed to the position following the resignation of then-councilor Ken Burgess. She has previously run for a city council seat.
There are two, three-year openings on the Sanford School Committee and so far, three people have taken out papers to gather nomination signatures – incumbent John Roux, former school committee member Jonathan Mapes and Amy Sevigny. As of Tuesday, incumbent Scott Sheppard had not taken out nomination papers.
The city also conducts elections of trustees for Sanford Sewerage District and Sanford Water District.
At the sewerage district, two, three-year terms are in the offing – a seat currently held by Kevin Eaton and another held until recently by Jonathan “Adam “ Brock, who recently resigned because he has moved from Sanford. A third trusteeship will also be on the ballot – a partial term held until Monday by Andrew Marby, who has also tendered his resignation because of a move elsewhere, according to Superintendent Andre Brousseau. The partial term runs through Dec, 31, 2020.
Eaton has signaled his intent to seek re-election.
At Sanford Water District, one, three-year term available. The incumbent is Roger Durant, who is in the running.
Those interested in being candidates for city council or school committee must gather signatures of 50 registered Sanford voters to be on the ballot.
Those considering trusteeships for Sanford Sewerage District or Sanford Water District need signatures of 25 registered Sanford voters to be on the Nov. 5 ballot.
Deadline to turn in nomination papers to the City Clerk’s office is 4:30 p.m. Sept. 5.
