Topsham-based Post 2197 wants to sponsor local students in the Veterans of Foreign Wars national scholastic programs.
Students in the general SAD 75, Brunswick, Lisbon, Durham, Harpswell and Freeport areas, including home schooled students, are encouraged to apply. Each year across the country, more than $3 million dollars in awards and scholarships are presented at local, district, state, and national levels. The Voice of Democracy competition is offered for high school students in grades 9-12, and the Patriot’s Pen is offered for students in grades 6-8. The post will select a winner in each category, and sponsor them in district competition.
This year’s topic, “What Makes America Great,” is the same for both programs. The Voice of Democracy is an audio essay, and the Patriot’s Pen is a written essay.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
