KENNEBUNKPORT — It’s going to be a family celebration of art and fun when Kennebunkport Parks and Recreation kicks off it’s third annual “Chalk the ‘Port” event on Friday, Sept. 13 as featured artists create a color canvas of chalk masterpieces.

The community celebration continues on Saturday, Sept. 14 with a host of activities geared toward all ages.  The event will be held at 20 Recreation Way, next to the Consolidated School and offers something for everyone, from toddlers to grandparents.

Participants can dive into a world of beautiful street art, created by our featured chalk painters from Maine, Pennsylvania, and Florida. The medium of street art can be traced back to 16th century Italy, when Madonnari (Italian drifting artists) traveled from town to town  recreating portraits of the Madonna on streets.

In the middle of the 20th century this art spread widely and became the centerpiece for multiple festivals and “Chalk the ‘Port” brings this festival to Kennebunkport, celebrating chalk art, fun, and family.

Events on Saturday, Sept. 14 open with the ColorMeKport 5K run where runners will be decorated with chalk as they traverse the course, on and off road.  Next up, Portside Rotary will host a pancake breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. as featured and local artists begin chalking their creations.  Stop by throughout the day to watch the artists develop their creations and  enjoy a lobster roll or a bowl of chowder.

Saturday’s celebration culminates in the Chalk Block Party that will include a beer tent sponsored by Batson River Brewery, live music by The Dock Squares and Northern Charm, carnival games & prizes, food court, ice cream sundaes, and campfire s’mores.

The literal highlight of the evening will be the luminaries at dusk. They will light the way to the finished chalk art which can be enjoyed to the twinkling lights and full moon, saidLaurie Smith, Kennebunkport Town Manager.
