SANFORD – Dozens gathered at Sanford Springvale YMCA on a bright Friday morning to celebrate the Leipold Family and thank them for their ongoing dedication to improving the lives of today’s youth.

The playground at the Y has been dedicated to the memory of Tim Leipold.

The youngest of the four Leipold brothers, Tim was a talented, caring, compassionate young man, said Y director Andy Orazio. He passed away some years ago.

“Tim’s creativity and ability to connect with children quickly made him a popular sitter and eventually a childcare supervisor at a local church,” Orazio noted.

The Leipold connection to the Y runs deep. For several years,Tim’s mother Ruth Leipold served on the Y’s Capital Campaign Committee and went on to serve on the YMCA’s Board of Directors, a role which allowed her to help shape the future of the organization.

The Y playground is a constant hub of activity, said Orazio.

“At almost any point during the day you can look over and see children running, playing, swinging, riding bikes and smiling,” he said in a statement.

Utilized by Camp Mini Marland and the Y’s Early Learning Center, the playground brings joy and confidence to over 100 children a year, she estimated. . When the playground is not being used by Y programming it is open to members. Families gather at the picnic tables and spend time together reconnecting through play.

“Dave and Ruth Leipold have been supporters of the Y for many years,” Orazio said. ”In addition to the recent playground updates, the Leipold’s support has provided equipment for tumbling classes and furnishings for the new Early Learning Center. Their support also provided the outdoor basketball court, which is used by both Y members and members of the community on a daily basis.”

“It  is not a stretch to say that their generosity has allowed thousands of children and families to pursue their passions in a place where they feel supported,” Orazio added.
