OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Old Orchard Beach residents interested in being an elected town official can take out nomination papers for the Town Council or School Board.

Those who wish to run must be registered Old Orchard Beach voters and can get nomination papers at the Town Clerk’s Office at Town Hall, 1 Portland Ave. Completed papers are due at the Town Clerk’s Office on Sept. 6 at 4 p.m.

Qualifying candidates will run in the Nov. 5 election. The polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Old Orchard Beach High School, 40 E. Emerson Cummings Blvd.

Up for election will be two council seats and one Regional School Unit 23 School Board seat. For council, voters will vote for two candidates, and one candidate for the School Board.

Town council seats are two-year terms and RSU board seats are three-year terms.

The Town Council is the legislative and policy making branch of town government, according to the Town Charter, and members “shall be the Representatives of the People of the Town, enact the bylaws, regulations and ordinances, set the governing policies and guide the affairs of the Town.”

The Town Council is comprised of five elected members, with a chairman and vice chairman appointed by council members. The chairman presides over Town Council meetings and is also a voting member of the council.

RSU 23 oversees schools in Old Orchard Beach. The RSU 23 board consists of five members. The board appoints a chairman and vice chairman and all members vote.
