WOOLWICH — A Woolwich man seriously injured in a four-vehicle crash on Route 1 Monday remains in critical condition at Maine Medical Center in Portland, according to the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office.

Chief Deputy Brett Strout stated in a press release Monday afternoon that 57-year-old Barry Wyman was still in critical condition at the hospital. No further update was available on Monday night.

The crash was reported shortly before 7 a.m. near the Taste of Maine and shut down Route 1 for more than three hours Monday so the sheriff’s department and Maine State Police could reconstruct the crash.

According to Strout, a Penske cargo van driven by William Young, 55, of Topsham was traveling north on Route 1 when it crossed the centerline and collided with Wyman’s southbound Subaru Forester. First responders had to cut Wyman free of the wreck, according to Woolwich Fire Chief Michael Demers.

The van then hit two other southbound vehicles. It struck a Subaru driven by Dorothy McCarren, 40, of Woolwich and a Subaru Legacy driven by Jacob Schwarz, 38, of Woolwich.

Young, McCarren and Schwarz were all taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick where they were treated and released Monday. There were no passengers in any of the vehicles involved.

Traffic was diverted to Middle Road. Route 1 reopened to traffic shortly after 10 a.m.

Strout said the crash is still under investigation. The sheriff’s office is trying to determine why the Penske truck crossed the centerline. No charges have been filed.

“Charges, if warranted, will take place once the investigation has been completed,” Strout said.

Anyone with information about the crash should contact the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office at (207) 443-9711.
