BATH — The state fire marshal’s office is investigating a fire reported at 734 Middle St. shortly before 3:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Everyone was out of the building at the time. Bath Police Chief Mike Field said officers met with a tenant who had extinguished the fire in the apartment building’s shared kitchen.
Field said the K9 team, Sgt. Michelle Small and her police dog Sampson, attempted to sniff out a possible suspect from the scene of the crime. The track didn’t lead to any suspects.
According to Field, there was strong evidence that the fire was intentionally set, so the state fire marshal’s office was called.
Fire investigator Mary MacMaster said Monday that the fire was an “incendiary fire,” meaning one that’s intentionally set. Residents remained outside while she examined the scene on Sunday morning.
MacMaster the fire caused minimal damage. She declined to release any further details.
“It’s under investigation,” she said.
