COLLEGES
The University of Maine men’s hockey team will play Nebraska-Omaha at Cross Insurance Arena on Jan. 4, the sixth consecutive year the Black Bears play a home game in Portland, according to the schedule announced Monday.
Maine, coming off a 15-17-4 season, will open next season at Providence on Oct. 5, and start its home schedule with games in Orono against Alaska-Anchorage on Oct. 11-12. The schedule was announced Monday.
The Black Bears will play five teams that qualified for the NCAA tournament last year, including a series at UMass, a national semifinalist, on Dec. 6-7. The game in Portland against Nebraska-Omaha will start at noon, completing a weekend series. The first game will be at 6 p.m. Jan. 3 in Orono.
BASEBALL
NECBL: Jonathan Crimmin and Sam Cochrane each drove in three runs in a nine-run first inning and the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (3-13) went on to a 17-2 victory over the Mainers (7-12) at Sanford.
Connor Tate singled home Jack Van Remortel in the eighth for Sanford’s first run, followed by Elliott Curtis’ homer in the ninth. Tate finished with two of the Mainers’ seven hits.
CMG FINANCIAL: Jacob Gautreau pitched a near-perfect game for Tucker Ford (6-4) in a shutout of Bonny Eagle (1-5) at Yarmouth. Gautreau, with 10 strikeouts, faced only 22 batters while allowing one single and walking no one. Reegan Thomas broke up the perfect game with a sixth-inning double. Jack McGrath hit two RBI singles for Tucker Ford, and Jason Laney scored three times.
FOOTBALL
NFL: Mark Rypien, the Super Bowl MVP for Washington in 1992, pleaded not guilty in Spokane, Washington, to a charge of domestic violence against his wife. Rypien announced last year that he believes he suffered brain damage while playing in the NFL, which causes him to behave violently at times.
Rypien was taken to the Spokane County jail Sunday after his arrest near a bank on the north side of the city. A witness who saw the couple called police and said Rypien’s wife alleged he had struck her. She was evaluated and didn’t need medical treatment, police said.
• Josh Brent, a former Dallas Cowboys player previously convicted in a drunken driving crash that killed a teammate, was charged with assaulting a police officer trying to handcuff him for public intoxication.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: Minnesota Lynx forward Karima Christmas-Kelly will miss the rest of the season with an injury to her right knee.
The Lynx said an MRI revealed the injury and Christmas-Kelly will have surgery Tuesday.
SOCCER
AFRICAN CUP: Sadio Mane made amends by scoring twice after missing an early penalty to see Senegal through to the knockout stage with a 3-0 victory against Kenya to take second in Group C in the event at Egypt. Algeria, which already qualified, won the group with a 3-0 win over Tanzania.
Ivory Coast also progressed by beating Namibia 4-1 to clinch second in Group D and Morocco finished first in that group by beating South Africa, 1-0.
GERMAN LEAGUE: Midfielder Giovanni Reyna, the 16-year-old son of a former United States international, Claudio Reyna, will join Borussia Dortmund’s under-19 team.
