BIW protesters should be prosecuted

The Sagadahoc County District Attorney’s Office needs to prosecute the BIW protesters who were arrested over the weekend. For years now I have observed these protesters getting away with slaps on the wrist or having their charges dropped altogether. What message does this send to members of our community, especially the youth – as long as the law you break isn’t a felony or will cost us more money and time than we deem it’s worth, we’ll give you a pass? I don’t care if the protesters’ message is altruistic or that many of them are veterans. Particularly the veterans should know better and conduct themselves in an honorable and dignified fashion. Thumbing your nose at the law is unacceptable. As a veteran myself, I’d gladly lay down my life to protect their right to free speech, but that right must be exercised within the confines of the law. If you don’t like the laws as written, work to change them. Until then, all parties need to set a good example – the protesters need to follow the law and the district attorney needs to prosecute them when they violate it. Otherwise, why have any laws at all? Actions have consequences and those consequences need to be strong enough to deter the violator from breaking the law in the future. Do your duty, District Attorney, and uphold your oath of office or step aside for someone who will.

Reader upset by headlines

Opening Wednesday, June 26’s newspaper was disappointing, because not one, but two of the major headlines were about murders that involved youth from the Midcoast area. I understand that life is not perfect; nevertheless, I can think of other headline ideas to use in lieu of these: presenting articles that elicit positive emotions, stories that create purposeful connections to the Midcoast. For example, articles that cover new methods of achievement in the midst of adversities; positive developments in youth organizations or the environment; creative ideas and events coming to the local downtowns. The Midcoast is full of supportive and caring community members. For future editions, please consider how the Midcoast is being represented in The Times Record.  Kindness inspires positivity and can make a lasting impression on your readers and our area.

We agree that the “Midcoast is full of supportive and caring community members,” and readers will find stories that reflect that notion nearly every day in The Times Record. However, we would be doing a disservice to that same community if we did not report on or print stories involving serious issues that face our community and our state, even when those issues lead to tragic consequences. — ED.
