According to athletic director Geoff Godo, the position was left vacant following the resignation of previous head coach Andy Morris.

“We are excited to have Coach Petrie leading our girls basketball program,” said Godo. “Julie’s combination of experience, enthusiasm and passion for basketball are characteristics that the girls and I both value tremendously.

“She has consistently demonstrated an ability to effectively coach at high levels and she makes great positive connections with her players, making her a terrific candidate for this position.”

Petrie, currently a health/physical education teacher at Mt. Ararat High School, is a 2004 graduate of Westbrook High School.

Following a four-year playing career at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, where she served as captain of the women’s basketball team for two seasons, she coached basketball at Lisbon High School for 11 years, the last eight as the varsity girls head coach, compiling a 47-99 record and leading the Greyhounds to a pair of playoff seasons.

In the fall, Petrie coaches the field hockey team at Lisbon, where her 2012 Greyhound squad captured the State Class C field hockey championship. She has a coaching mark in field hockey of 82-45-6, including the playoffs where her squads have gone 14-7 since 2011, including a championship game appearance in 2014.

She has also served as an assistant coach for outdoor track at Mt. Ararat Middle School and Westbrook High School.

The Eagles will look to build upon this past season’s playoff run after finishing 8-10 in the regular season and returning to the Maine Principals’ Association playoffs for the first time since 2015 before losing to rival Brunswick in a Class A quarterfinal game at the Portland Expo.

Morris coached the Eagles for five seasons, leading the squad to the postseason in his first year. Mt. Ararat compiled a 22-70 mark, including the playoffs, during Morris’ tenure.
