BRUNSWICK — A vehicle crashed into a utility pole on Gurnet Road across from the Applebee’s restaurant Monday, forcing Central Maine Power to cut off service to Cook’s Corner and sending two people to the hospital.

Brunswick Deputy Fire Chief Don Koslosky said the fire department was called to the crash at 11 Gurnet Road at 11:17 a.m. One person was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland. A 74-year-old woman was taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick with minor injuries, according to Bath Deputy Fire Chief Christopher Cummings.

“My understanding is the driver had a medical emergency and hit the pole, which didn’t knock out power,” Koslosky said. “But the pole ended up … catching on fire above the car.”

Firefighters quickly removed the two occupants from the vehicle. Central Maine Power Co. cut power to the area, making it safe for rescue crews to treat the patients.

No other information about the crash was available Monday.

CMP reported 1,040 customers in Brunswick without power at approximately 12:30 p.m. Traffic lights in the area of Cook’s Corner were not working.

Power was fully restored later in the day. CMP did not return a phone call seeking information about the outage.
