The Sanford Mainers were held to just one hit as they dropped their NECBL season-opener, 13-0, to the Steeplecats in six innings at Joe Wolfe Field in North Adams, Massachusetts.
Tyler Hays picked up the win for North Adams, pitching 5 ⅓ perfect innings and striking out 10. Jacob Abbot took over for Hays with one out in the sixth and allowed a single from Shane Marshall.
Sam Punzi drove in four runs for the Steeplecats, including two on a double in a five-run third in which North Adams took a 7-0 lead. Punzi added an RBI single in a six-run fifth to give North Adams a 13-0 advantage.
Sanford outfielder Shane Marshall picked up the only Mainers hit.
Sanford makes its home debut at Goodall Park Saturday at 6:30 p.m. against the Valley Blue Sox.
