WINDHAM—The Windham boys ended their Bonny Eagle counterparts’ 2019 on Wednesday, May 29: The No. 7 Eagles bested the No. 10 Scots at first and third singles, as well as at first doubles, to oust them from the playoff prelims.

“Windham overmatched us at first and third singles,” Bonny Eagle head coach Hossein Miremadi said.

At first singles, Eagle Steven Sepulveda topped Scot Brandon Hogan 6-0, 6-0. Then, at third singles, Ben White of Windham topped Anthony Phillips of BE by the same score.

“Stephen’s powerful forehand led him to victory,” Windham head coach Garry Stone said. “He has been an outstanding player for us throughout his high school career and we will miss him and his leadership on our team next year, as he will be graduating.”

At second singles, meanwhile, Bonny Eagler Nick Sawyer defeated Windhamite Vireak Tray 7-5, 6-4.

“Nick was attacking the ball well,” Miremadi said, “drawing in his opponent to setup winners, winning in straight sets.”

At first doubles, Andrew Wing and Gabe McPhail (Windham) defeated Ian Jarvis and Ben Atkinson (BE) 6-0, 6-3.

“Andrew and Gabe dominated, as they have done all spring,” Stone said. “They went 12-1 this season. The key to this is that they both have good, consistent strokes when playing back and are both excellent at the net. They are savvy doubles players and have really come together as a unit. They have been a major part of our success as a team this season.”

“My first doubles team played competitively,” Miremadi said, “but couldn’t win the net game, which was their ultimate demise.”

Second doubles proved the only three-set match of the afternoon. Bonny Eaglers Peyton Oertel and Lewin Pillsbury came back, after dropping a set 3-6, to triumph over Windhamites Hayden Bilodeau and Devon Harnden 6-0, 6-3.

“My team dropped the first set,” Miremadi said, but stormed back to win the next two sets with effective ground strokes and strong net play.”

The Scots conclude their spring at 6-7. Windham, 9-4 after the win, moved on to the second round of the bracketing, where they faced No. 2 Thornton Academy, succumbing 4-1.
