In celebration of 15 years at their 25 Foreside Road location, Topsham Public Library has scheduled an anniversary party on Saturday. Festivities begin at 10 a.m. with a photo booth, all-ages tie dye craft and a scavenger hunt.

At 11 a.m. there will be live music with local artist Matt Loosigian. Bring your own lunch and enjoy a picnic at noon weather permitting, and participate in cookie decorating at 12:30 p.m., which is also when Happy Anniversary cake will be served. A free movie screening of “Treasure Island” will take place at 1 p.m.

The first library facility in Topsham was established in 1803. In 1931, the first public library was incorporated by a group of women who established the Topsham Public Library on the second floor of the Androscoggin Firehouse. In 1941, Sarah Whitten bequeathed her family home at 8 Pleasant St., which became the library’s location for the next sixty years.

As Topsham’s population grew from 2,000 to nearly 10,000, increasing demands were placed on the town’s library. It became apparent to the staff and Board of Trustees that the Whitten home had become inadequate, and a new library facility became an important item in Topsham’s long-range plan. In 2000, the library moved to a temporary location at the Navy Annex. The Board of Trustees began in earnest to plan for the new facility.

In May 2004, after a capital campaign, the approval of a bond by town voters, and efforts on the part of the board, staff and community, Topsham Public Library moved into its first permanent home.

The Topsham Public Library is located at 25 Foreside Road in Topsham. For more information, call Topsham Public Library at (207) 725-1727 or visit www.topshamlibrary.org.
