Editor,

Regarding the recent letter about open primaries.

Be careful what you wish for, Mr. Evans.

Imagine an “open primary” in Maine wherein many Republicans and Conservatives can vote for a Democratic primary candidate who could easily be defeated in the subsequent general election by the Republican primary winner.  This has actually happened elsewhere in the U.S.

Open primaries deny all logic and common sense.  A political party is basically a “club” which anyone can join (and at zero expense).  Can you name any club or organization (including those receiving government funding) that allows non-members to vote in their leadership elections?

I challenge the non-affiliated voters of Maine to grow a backbone, choose a party that most closely represents your interests, and register to vote in its primary.
