SOUTH PORTLAND — The public is invited to join a guided hike on a trail encircling Clarks Pond on the city’s West End June 1 in celebration of National Trails Day.
The 1.1-mile hike follows the western and southern shores of the pond and emerges on Westbrook Street. The guided hike will be led by South Portland Land Trust board member Jeff Ryan.
The hike is set to depart at 9 a.m. from the Home Depot Parking lot trail head, which can be accessed from Gorham Road, or John Roberts Road from the southeast corner of the Maine Mall. The walk will be about 45 minutes of moderately strenuous exercise.
National Trails Day, an initiative by the American Hiking Society, aims to inspire the public and trail enthusiasts to discover, learn about and celebrate trails while participating in educational exhibits, trail dedications, workshops, trail projects and more.
The Clarks Pond Trail was the first major project of the West End Trails Committee, a sub-committee of the SPLT that is dedicated to making the neighborhood friendlier for pedestrians and cyclists.
