BIDDEFORD – The Biddeford girls lacrosse team captured their first win of the season with a 16-7 win over visiting Bonny Eagle on Tuesday at Waterhouse Field.
After falling behind 1-0 early in the first half, the Tigers scored 9-0 straight goals.
Biddeford coach Caitlin Albert thought her team needed the win, especially after an eight-run to Falmouth to open the year.
“I think we needed a little boost of confidence,” said Albert. “Bonny Eagle has some really good players, and they gave us a good challenge. I think our senior leadership really stepped up and came through.”
Bonny Eagle’s Gretchen Biegel scored with 1:03 left in the first half to produce a 9-2 score going into the second.
The Tigers outscored the Scots 7-5 in the second half behind their seniors, Paige Laverriere, Brooke Reissfelder, Grace Boisvert, Ella Mckenzie, Madelyn Farley and Hailey Allen.
Laverriere and Megan Mourmouras led the Tigers with four points each. Reissfelder finished with a trio of goals, while Abby Allen and Boisvert added two each. Kairlye McQueen added one score.
Mckenzie also had an impressive showing in the cage for Biddeford, racking up 13 saves.
Gretchen Biegel led the Scots with four goals, while Alexis Theberge added three.
“They were outstanding,” said Bonny Eagle head coach Judy Martin. “Biegel reads the game really well. She anticipates really well, gets to where she needs to go. She’s got great hustle. Theberge is fast, intense, wants to score so she gets in there.”
Bonny Eagle goalie Jocelyn Manson recorded eight saves in the loss.
Despite the end score, Martin was proud of her teams never give up attitude.
“They never gave up, they work hard the entire time,” said Martin. “I think we got off to a slow start. Our transition offensively was working really well but we just weren’t marking up well of our defensive transition that was a big factor.”
The Tigers improve to 1-1 while the Scots drop to 0-1.
Bonny Eagle hosts Massabesic on Thursday, while Biddeford travels to Wells on Saturday.
“We’re hoping to take this momentum into that game,” said Albert. “I’m a stickler so I think we’ll work on making sure that we’re tighter on defense and hope to work more as a unit.”
