BRUNSWICK — Firefighters extinguished a garage fire on Gundalo Gap Road in Brunswick Saturday evening before it could spread to the nearby home.

The fire was reported at 50 Gundalo Gap Road off Mere Point Road just before 7 p.m. by a neighbor. Engines and tankers were called from five or six other towns.

Brunswick Fire Chief Ken Brillant said the family evacuated safely and the four young children went to a neighbor’s home.

One Brunswick firefighter who was working to ventilate the building was taken to Mid Coast Hospital as a precaution after suffering a medical issue. As of 9 p.m. Saturday he was still being evaluated in the emergency room and Brillant was hopeful he would be discharged later the same evening.

Crews put out the flames within about 15 minutes, the fire chief said.

“The guys did a good job,” Brillant said. “It was a really good save. Some things really worked in our favor.”

According to tax records, the property is owned by Matthew and Christina Corbett.

Brillant said the family wasn’t displaced, but were weighing whether to stay at the neighbor’s home for the night.

Brillant said the fire was sparked by a heat lamp in the garage that was being used to keep a group of chicks warm. Firefighters only found two chicks alive.

One way to prevent fires when using heat lamps, Brillant said, is to make sure they are secured properly so they don’t fall or get knocked into the combustible material like sawdust used in an animal’s cage.

“A heat lamp puts out a lot of heat and you’re talking about materials like wood shavings and sawdust. It doesn’t take a whole lot to get those going,” he said.
