SANFORD – Mac Smith, author of “Mainers on the Titanic,” will speak at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16 in the Community Room at Louis B. Goodall Memorial Library, 952 Main St. in Sanford.
Smith’s book traces the stories of passengers on that fateful ship who had ties to Maine. Some were wealthy summer visitors to Mount Desert Island, but there were many other full-time residents of the state aboard the ship.
The book details the agonizing wait of Mainers for news of what really happened to their loved ones aboard. It tells the stories of Maine passengers from their boarding to the sinking, rescue and arrival back in the country, and, for those who did not survive, their final coming ashore in Halifax, Nova Scotia. All are welcome.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
