LYMAN — The owner of one of the most popular micro-breweries in northern New England is inviting veterans of the Vietnam War to gather on Friday afternoon in Lyman to tell stories, remember fallen comrades, and hopefully share many laughs.

Friday (and every March 29) is National Vietnam War Veterans Day, passed by Congress and signed into law by President Donald Trump in March of 2017.

Paul Lorrain, who served a tour of duty in Vietnam from 1970 through 1971 after enlisting in the United States Army, is the owner (along with son Abraham) of Funky Bow Beer Company, a popular spot in Lyman, just west of Biddeford and Arundel.

Earlier this week, he wrote to all Vietnam Veterans on Facebook: “Come to Funky Bow and I will personally pay your cover charge and your first beer! Come on up and let’s remember all the good times — share stories and talk about where we were in country. See you folks on Friday night.”

Lorrain grew up in Boothbay Harbor and now lives in Lyman. Anyone familiar with Funky Bow, on Route 35 not far from Route 111 in Lyman, knows the very funky atmosphere for which the brewery is so well known.

The roughly hewn grounds “deep in the woods of Lyman” have a distinctly “real Maine” feel, a rustic, outdoorsy atmosphere in which all people feel welcome, including children and family dogs. Not far from the studied chic of metropolitan Portland, Funky Bow has just the opposite vibe: relaxed, casual, woodsy, blue collar and unpretentious.

“I know for a fact that vets feel very comfortable here, so I’d like to get the word out in advance to all Vietnam vets in Maine,” Lorrain said. “If you’re looking for a place and an opportunity to unwind and talk about what we went through back in those difficult days, you’ll be among friends here on Friday.”

Lorrain has hired a live band, Diamond Sky, and Funky Bow will be serving its full line of specialty micro-brews. The event will start at 4 p.m. on Friday, but Lorrain cautions patrons to note the brewery closes relatively early, at 9 p.m.

We’re very egalitarian — we throw everybody out at nine,” he said. Homemade, wood-fired pizza is available at 4 p.m., and the band starts at 5 p.m. The brewery is located at 21 Ledgewood Lane in Lyman. For more information, visit the website www.funkybowbeercompany.com.

According to the new U.S. law signed in 2017, every March 29 is to be formally recognized as National Vietnam War Veterans Day, to thank and honor Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the nation. Observances distinctly recognize former prisoners of war and families of those still listed as missing in action.
