BOWDOINHAM — A Bowdoinham home was destroyed in a Saturday evening fire.

The Bowdoinham Fire Department was called to 727 Ridge Road shortly after 5 p.m. for a structure fire.

According to Bowdoinham Fire Chief Arthur Frizzle, the house is owned by Dick and Debbie Spaulding, who weren’t home when the blaze broke out.

A neighbor reported the fire, but flames were already tearing through the home when firefighters arrived. Frizzle said a neighbor ran to the home to make sure the pets were safe and moved a vehicle away from the residence.

Firefighters focused on trying to save the garage, but the fire had already spread into the attic space in the garage.

“The fire had a considerable head start on us and was driven by strong winds blowing across the fields,” Frizzle said.

Frizzle said the home is a total loss and was insured. The fire appeared to originate in the living room but the cause remains under investigation.

No injuries were reported. Crews responded from Richmond, Bowdoin, Dresden, Litchfield and Topsham. Bowdoinham firefighters were called back to the scene at 4:30 a.m. Sunday when the fire rekindled.

The homeowners were already working to find temporary housing, Frizzle said Sunday.
