A Portland man with a criminal record faces a felony charge of eluding an officer following a high-speed chase Friday night on the Maine Turnpike from York to Biddeford.

Maine State Police said David Logugune, 21, was spotted by a state trooper in York when Logugune’s car left a trail of sparks from a dragging muffler. After stopping his car, Logugune took off in the northbound lanes, reaching speeds of more than 100 mph, according to Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Troopers put down a spike mat 20 miles north in Biddeford, and that deflated Logugune’s tires.

Logugune’s car struck a second vehicle as the chase ended about 8 p.m. The driver of the second car was treated for minor injuries, McCausland said.

Northbound traffic was disrupted while troopers investigated the crash.

Logugune is being held at the York County Jail in Alfred, and is charged with eluding a police office, a Class C felony. He was not given bail and will face a video arraignment Monday at Springvale District Court, according to a York County Jail official.

Logugune does not have a driver’s license and bail conditions from prior charges prohibit him from driving, state police said.

In 2018, Logugune was arrested after crashing a stolen car into a Westbrook apartment building on May 10, according to police. Earlier, when police were following the car and tried to pull it over, Logugune turned onto Giles Street, a dead end, crashed the car into the side of the apartment building and got out and ran. He was apprehended by a Westbrook officer and police dog.

Logugune was later convicted of operating under the influence, theft by unauthorized use of property, and aggravated criminal mischief in connection with the Westbrook incident, according to the State Bureau of Identification. Logugune’s adult criminal record dates back to 2016 and includes convictions for theft by unauthorized use, possession of illegal drugs, disorderly conduct, criminal trespass, assault and parole violations.
