On a team that starts four seniors, freshman Logan Brown has fit right in.

Wednesday morning, she made the biggest shot of the game, helping second-seeded Brunswick defeat third-seeded Marshwood, 51-46, in a Class A South girls’ basketball semifinal at Cross Insurance Arena.

Brown, who sat for much of the game because of foul trouble, hit a 3-pointer with just under two minutes remaining to give the Dragons the lead for good. Brunswick hit four foul shots in the final 1:14 to secure its third consecutive trip to the regional final.

“Coming in, I figured Logan would be a varsity player,” said Brunswick Coach Sam Farrell. “But from the very first day of tryouts, she showed she wasn’t giving up playing time to any player.”

Brunswick (19-1) will play top-seeded Greely in the regional final for the third consecutive year, at 6 p.m. Saturday at CIA.

Marshwood finished 15-5, losing in the semifinals for the third year in a row.

The Hawks scored the first eight points and held a 43-40 lead late, but twice missed chances to extend the lead.

“We didn’t look like ourselves the last four minutes for the first time really all year,” said Marshwood Coach Steve Freeman. “We were tentative. And because of that, we had some unforced turnovers … In a game like this, this tight, it doesn’t take much for a play or two to change momentum.”

With Marshwood clinging to its three-point lead, Brunswick’s Emily Larochelle and Charlotte MacMillan combined for a steal. Alexis Guptil then found MacMillan inside, and she was fouled as she scored. Her free throw tied the game with 3:08 remaining.

After a Marshwood miss, Larochelle (16 points) made the first of two foul shots. Angelina Bisson (11 points) then gave the Hawks a 45-44 lead with a right baseline jumper with 2:08 left. But the Dragons broke Marshwood’s press and got the ball to Brown.

“She took four dribbles,” said Farrell, “and she had Emily underneath with one defender. I told her to shoot.”

He didn’t have to. Brown was already primed to let it go. “If you’re open, you’ve got to take it,” she said.

She pulled up at the college 3-point line and let the shot fly. “The net barely moved,” said Farrell.

And the Dragons were ahead, 47-45.

“If you’re open you’ve got to take it,” said MacMillan. “We found her and she got it.”

Larochelle was fouled with 1:14 left and hit both free throws. MacMillan (11 points) made two more from the line with 15.3 seconds left.

“It’s great to keep this going,” said MacMillan. “We’re all together. That’s what gets us here, we’re so close as a team.”
