SOUTH BERWICK — Gather with fellow writers to share work, feedback, and encouragement at A Writer’s Circle writers’ group, held the second Monday of the month throughout the year at Sarah Orne Jewett House Museum and Visitor Center in South Berwick.
This nurturing and inspiring writers’ group, facilitated by Brian Evans-Jones, former poet laureate of Hampshire County, U.K., is open to all levels and genres.
Bring a short piece of your writing to share with the group, or come just to listen and be inspired.
During months in which the second Monday is a national holiday, the group meets the following week. Dates for the upcoming year are Feb. 11, March 11, April 8, May 13, June 10, July 8, Aug. 12, Sept. 9, Oct. 21, Nov. 18, and Dec. 16.
New this year, group members will have an opportunity to participate in A Writer’s Circle student reading, free and open to the public, Thursday, Oct. 10, at the site.
Now in its fifth year, the group has established itself as a source of community for area writers.
“I’ve been a member of many writers groups over the last 20 years, and the Jewett Writers’ Group is exceptional among them,” facilitator Brian Evans-Jones said. “It’s not so much the quality of the writing that makes it stand out, though that is usually very high, but the support that the members have always shown each other. Members really care about each other and offer insightful and honest feedback to each other of their writing. We’ve welcomed people with books published and people who’ve never written before, and everyone goes away with useful comments as to how they can develop their work. It’s a wonderful thing to have at Sarah Orne Jewett’s old home, and we hope that many more folk will come and share it with us.”
Historic New England South Berwick Site Manager Marilyn Keith Daly agreed.
“Sarah Orne Jewett was herself a mentor to other writers and to artists,” she said. “This is the perfect setting for honing skills, in the home of a great American writer, surrounded by a community of contemporaries.”
Admission to the program is $8 to Historic New England members, and $10 for nonmembers, with a discount available of $54 for six classes. For first-time attendees the cost is $5.
