YORK COUNTY – With help from the public, Valentine’s Day could be made a little sweeter for the cats at Another Chance Animal Rescue in Sanford.

The BonBons for BonBon Challenge asks supporters to send Valentine’s Day cards to one of the rescue’s kittens that arrived at Another Chance in spring malnourished and in danger of losing both eyes.

“The vet said the ‘eye kittens’ would each lose at least one eye and BonBon, maybe both,” said volunteer Jo-Ann Bertrand, a Biddeford resident.

Head of the rescue’s main foster location, Marilyn Harley, and a team of volunteers fed and medicated the litter of five kittens every three to four hours.

All of the litter, except BonBon, have been adopted.

The Valentine’s Day cards, should the sender be so inclined, may include a donation to help pay for the medical care that helped BonBon keep both eyes. It will also go toward medical bills accrued in December that helped many older, needy cats that found themselves at Another Chance, a nonprofit organization that serves York County and beyond.

Also in February, available singles – cats in need of adoption – will be featured everyday on the Another Chance Facebook page.

“Every cat adopted the first two weeks of February will get a Valentine bag with food and treats for their new addition,” Bertrand said. “Plus, their name will go into a drawing at the end of the promotion (on Feb. 16) to win a Valentine’s Day basket with items for the adopter and adoptee.”

“We encourage you to open up your hearts this Valentine’s Day and take a look at some of the cats who often are overlooked,” Harley said. “We have older feline residents who are so ready to offer their love.”

Another Chance Animal Rescue, located at 251 Country Club Road, Route 4, Sanford is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays for adoptions or by chance. To make an appointment, call 490-2855.
