A man and woman were seriously injured Friday morning when a car crossed the center line of Route 302 in Casco and struck on oncoming vehicle head on.
The crash occurred around 5:15 a.m. in the area of Casco known as Watkins Flats, and shut down Route 302 for a portion of the morning commute.
Both drivers had to be extricated from their vehicles and both were transported to Central Maine Medical Center by Life Flight, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, which responded to the crash.
The two injured drivers are Alana Eidemiller, 34, of Casco, and Leonard Grover, 47, also of Casco. Sheriff’s Capt. Craig Smith said both were in serious condition at CMMC.
A Chevrolet Cruze driven by Eidemiller crossed the center line and collided with a Subaru driven by Grover. The engine block of the Cruze dislodged from the vehicle and caught fire on the roadway, police said.
Smith said that it appeared the crash was caused by road conditions, speed and failure to maintain control, and that one of the drivers might be cited depending on what the investigation reveals.
Smith did not identify the driver who might have been at fault.
