PORTLAND — WMPG Community Radio, the student and volunteer-operated, non-commercial radio station in southern Maine, announces the first training opportunity for 2019 for radio programmers.
On-air hosts, DJs and producers at WMPG are students and volunteers. New trainees are welcome to jump into the creative, dynamic and fun world of community radio.
The process of making local, independent free-speech radio begins with a one-hour orientation session, which will take place on Monday, Jan. 28 on the Portland campus of USM. The second step is selecting a set of three two-hour classes for training, and then becoming qualified for air at WMPG.
WMPG is a grass roots, non-commercial radio station. Located at the University of Southern Maine, WMPG is a Campus/Community hybrid station, and operates with involvement, both on air and behind the scenes, from many volunteers from the community.
The radio station strives to bring the sounds, the ideas, music, voices and languages that are not heard elsewhere on the dial.
It broadcasts on 90.9 FM in southern and central Maine, and also streams live online 24 hours/day to anywhere in the world at wmpg.org.
For more information, and to sign up for the Jan. 28 orientation, interested parties may contact Jessica Lockhart at 780-4598 or send an email to programdirector@wmpg.org.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
