SANFORD — A Sanford man was sentenced to 10 years in prison with all but three years suspended for his role in the Jan. 11 stabbing of a male victim who claimed he was held against his will for several hours by three people in a Sanford apartment.

Cody Boudreau, 23, was sentenced on Monday by Judge Jeffrey Moskowitz at York County Superior Court in Alfred after pleading guilty in October to aggravated assault, assault, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, terrorizing and theft against the victim, identified by prosecutors as Justin Richardson.

In all, police charged three people with various crimes, including kidnapping and aggravated assault for holding Richardson against his will for several hours in an abandoned Emery Street apartment, stabbing him and beating him with a pipe.

Shantel Rodriguez, of Sanford, who was 23 at the time of the incident, pleaded guilty earlier this year to kidnapping, assault and terrorizing and was sentenced to 12 years in prison, with all but four years suspended, court records show.

A third suspect, Dylan Austin, 26, also of Sanford, is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 13 and remains in custody at the York County Jail in Alfred.

Richardson, a 28-year-old Sanford resident, told Sanford Police investigators that his captors claimed he owed them $3,000 for drugs and an additional $5,000 for making them wait for the money.

In a press statement released in February, Sanford Police Detective Sergeant Matthew Jones said that the victim told police he was beaten and held against his will for several hours in an abandoned apartment after being lured there by an  acquaintance.

“The victim was forced to make phone calls to procure a large sum of money to secure his release,” said Jones in the press statement.

“During this period of captivity, the victim was beaten and feared for his life. The victim made an attempt to escape and was tackled and stabbed with a knife.”

Jones said the victim was unable to procure the money. He was found by a neighbor bleeding in a snowbank on Emery Street and had sustained a stab wound to the chest.

When police arrived, they found the victim in a fetal position, according to an affidavit on file at the court. His face was bloody and an area around one of his eyes was bruised and swollen. Paramedics noticed blood on his shirt and the victim admitted that he’d been stabbed.

According to the affidavit, police saw a puncture mark under the victim’s left armpit. He was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment.

Rodriguez allegedly told police that the victim had stolen $3,000 in rent money from her; that she punched him in the face and told him to sit down because she wanted to talk to him. She said the victim then said he could make some calls to get the money, according to court documents.

She claimed she went outside to start her truck and when she returned everyone was coming down the stairs toward her. She told police she took a knife out of her pocket because she was scared, that the other two suspects were hitting the victim and that she got knocked to the ground.

She told police she didn’t know the victim had been stabbed, according to the court documents.

Austin allegedly told police that when he arrived, the victim who was at the top of the stairs and began “freaking out” and fell down the stairs. He allegedly said he wasn’t aware the victim had been stabbed.

Police said they found a pool of blood on the main floor of the apartment and in a bedroom, along with clothing items and a drug pipe.

A news release from the York County District Attorney’s Office issued Thursday said that Sanford Police Detective Eric Small was the primary investigator on the case.
