University of Maine football coach Joe Harasymiak was named the Region 1 coach of the year Tuesday by the American Football Coaches Association.

In his third season as head coach, Harasymiak led the Black Bears to the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision semifinals for the first time. Maine finished 10-4 after being picked to finish eighth in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Harasymiak was previously named the CAA coach of the year and the Gridiron Club of Boston coach of the year. He was also a finalist for the STATS FCS Eddie Robinson national coach of the year, finishing sixth in the balloting.

Two Maine defensive players were also honored on Tuesday with selections to the STATS FCS all-America team.

Senior linebacker Sterling Sheffield, who had 84 tackles (including 18 for a loss), nine sacks, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and an interception, was named to the first team while junior cornerback Manny Patterson, who had 47 tackles and 22 pass deflections, was named to the second team.

• Oklahoma won the Joe Moore Award, given to the team with the best offensive line in the country.

The Sooners’ line, coached by co-offensive coordinator Bill Bedenbaugh, paved the way for the most productive offense in the country and Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray.

• Kent State receiver Antwan Dixon, Dartmouth defensive lineman Seth Simmer and Carson-Newman running back Antonio Wimbush are the first recipients of the Mayo Clinic college football Comeback Player of the Year Award.

BASEBALL

MAJOR LEAGUES: Pitcher Matt Harvey has agreed to an $11 million, one-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels, a person familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press on Tuesday. Harvey can earn an additional $3 million in performance bonuses.

The right-hander, who turns 30 in March, was a star early in his career with the Mets, but injuries set him back and off-the-field incidents soured his relationship with the team. The Mets traded him to Cincinnati last May.

• Longtime star Carlos Beltran has joined the New York Yankees as a special adviser.

Beltran spent nearly three seasons of his 20-year major league career with the Yankees. Popular and productive in pinstripes, he was dealt to Texas at the 2016 trade deadline.

• The Minnesota Twins will retire Joe Mauer’s No. 7 jersey next season, moving swiftly to honor the six-time All-Star who retired after a 15-year major league career.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Brian Agler is the new coach of the Dallas Wings, the team announced Tuesday.

Agler resigned as the head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks last month, saying he was ready for a new challenge.

He’s the all-time winningest coach in U.S. women’s professional basketball with 315 regular-season victories. He’s the first coach in league history to win titles with two teams: Agler guided the Seattle Storm to the 2010 WNBA championship and Los Angeles to the 2016 title.

GOLDEN SHOE: Lionel Messi received his record fifth Golden Shoe award on Tuesday for leading all of Europe’s soccer leagues in scoring last season.

Messi scored 34 goals in the Spanish league last season to lead Barcelona to the title.

LEAGUE CUP: Manchester City beat Leicester 3-1 in a penalty shootout after the game finished 1-1 in regulation to advance to the semifinals.
