BRUNSWICK — Following a brief illness, Cal died peacefully and surrounded by his loving family on December 2, 2018, at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, Maine. Cal was the seventh of nine children born to Elizabeth Louisa Carey Morgan and Leon Thomas Morgan on October 26, 1924, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Cal grew up in Woodbury Heights, New Jersey, and spent many happy times at the shore in Avalon, New Jersey.

Cal is survived by his daughters Tracie Morgan and Nancie Morgan Bogart and her husband, Bruce. Grandchildren Amanda D’Alessio MacQuarrie and her husband, Brett, Heather D’Alessio and her husband, Jimbo Loveitt, Nathan D’Alessio, Molly Bogart and Hannah Bogart. Great grandchildren Piper D’Alessio, Elijah D’Alessio, Lila MacQuarrie and Adeline MacQuarrie, his sister, Virginia Morgan Hill, and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends. Cal was predeceased by his wife, Natalie O. Morgan, with whom he shared 57 years of adventure, fun and love and by great granddaughter, Zinnia Natalie Loveitt.

Cal volunteered for the U.S. Navy in 1942 and proudly served his country in the Pacific theater in World War II, in the Korean Conflict and during the Vietnam War. Cal was an atomic veteran and participated in Operations Crossroad witnessing nuclear weapon testing in July 1946 from the U.S.S. Shangri-La. Cal loved to say he joined the Navy and really did “see the world” having been on three round the world cruises with dozens of ports of call.

He became a specialist in underwater sound and during the Cold War became known as the “man with the golden ears” at Brunswick Naval Air Station. In 1966, Cal retired from active duty and began his second career as a consultant for defense contractors in the United States and Canada.

In 1980, he and his wife, Natalie, opened a clock shop, Antique Timepieces, turning a life long love and avocation of restoring and repairing antique clocks and watches into his third career. Cal’s many interests included flying airplanes, the repair and restoration of stringed instruments, collecting, playing golf and sailing.

Cal was a founding member of the Maine Chapter #89 of the National Watch and Clock Collectors Association and became a fellow of the National Watch and Clock Collectors Association in 1997. He was a longtime member of the United Masonic Lodge #8 in Brunswick.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Those who wish to do so may make a contribution in Cal’s memory to the National Watch & Clock Collectors Association, the United Masonic Lodge #8, the Shriners Hospital for Children or to another charity of one’s choosing.
