BRUNSWICK — Brunswick firefighters rescued a woman from the Androscoggin River Wednesday after she reportedly fell or jumped from the Frank J. Wood Bridge.

The Brunswick Police Department and Topsham and Brunswick fire departments received a report that a woman had gone off the bridge that links Topsham and Brunswick and fallen into the river around 12:10 p.m. Wednesday.

Brunswick Fire Department Deputy Chief Donald Koslosky said that when he made it to the bridge, bystanders pointed out the woman in the water just past the bridge.

“She was just rounding Sea Dog,” he said. “Once we made it around the corner, we kept eyes on her. We were unable to reach her with any throw ropes, and we just kept eyes on her until the (rescue) boat was launched.”

According to Koslosky, she was unresponsive to emergency personnel on the shore, though she was conscious when the Brunswick Fire Department’s boat arrived to pull her out of the 32 degree water. The boat took the woman to the boat launch, where she was placed in an ambulance and taken to Mid Coast Hospital. Koslosky said he wasn’t aware of any injuries.

“Her condition did not look life-threatening,” said Brunswick Police Cmdr. Mark Waltz.

Brunswick police say they aren’t yet certain whether the woman jumped or fell from the bridge.

The woman’s name and age are not being released, according to reporting from the Portland Press Herald.
