Brunswick – Verna Grover Coombs, 85 of Brunswick, Maine went peacefully home to be with her Lord and Savior on November 18, 2018 after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Verna was a lifelong resident of Brunswick.  She was born in 1933 to Frances and Jake Grover of Brunswick.

As a young woman she was a member of the West Bath Grange where she met a saxophone player named Don Coombs.  They were eventually married in Bath, Maine in 1951.  They built their own house in Brunswick and made it their home.

Verna is survived by her sisters and their spouses, Nancy and Doug Boyden of Brunswick, and Carol and Carl Hein-Hansen of Dresden, and her brother, Norman Robshaw of West Bath.

She is also survived by her children and their spouses, Cheryl & Ed Kirk of Morgantown, Pennsylvania, Kathleen and Donald Murphy of Lisbon, and Darryl and Lori Coombs of Brunswick.  Verna had nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Verna loved reading, playing her piano, singing, and watching classic movies.  She was a volunteer chaplain at Mid Coast Hospital Senior Center, and a founding member of the Living Hope Orthodox Presbyterian Church of Brunswick.  Verna was known for her compassion and gracious spirit.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Don Coombs in 1996, her mother, Frances Robshaw in 2016, and her father, Jake Grover in 1986.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 27 at the Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street, Brunswick.  Burial will be at Harding Cemetery, Brunswick in the spring.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to her church, Living Hope Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 142 Pleasant Street, Brunswick, ME 04011 or to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (www.alzfdn.org)
