BIDDEFORD — Caring Unlimited, York County’s Domestic Violence Resource Center, will present the Survivor Stories Project in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Thursday. The one-time performance will be at 6 p.m. at Engine Gallery, 128 Main St., Biddeford.

The event is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

For survivors, writing and sharing their experiences can be a powerful part of the healing process, and for others to hear these true stories, in the survivor’s own words, raises awareness about the reality and prevalence of domestic violence in York County, the people from Caring Unlimited said.

“At a time when survivors are bravely sharing their stories every day in the national news and via social media, this project feels particularly timely. The stories that make the news can sometimes feel so far removed from our own reality, but this program reminds us that abuse can happen to anyone, and it happens here,” said Emily Gormley, Public Awareness and  Community Support coordinator at Caring Unlimited.

The stories that will be shared as part of the project were written by survivors of domestic abuse and collected by Caring Unlimited. They will be read by a cast of volunteers from the local community, and the authors’ names will remain confidential.
