BIDDEFORD — The undefeated Marshwood football team scored five touchdowns in the first quarter and never looked back as the Hawks rolled to a 40-6 victory over Biddeford at Waterhouse Field on Friday night.
“I’m disappointed in how we showed up. I think we got out everythinged — from the coaches, to the players, to our approach. This game is about blocking and tackling and tonight we didn’t do either one particularly well,” said Biddeford head coach Brian Curit.
The Hawks opened up the scoring with 8:33 left in the first quarter as Justin Bryant ran the ball in for a 14-yard touchdown and produced a 6-0 score.
A minute later, the ball was awarded back to the Hawks after a fumble on the kick return. At the 7:15 mark, Bryant carried in his second touchdown of the night — this one from 26-yards out.
With 4:50 left in the first quarter, the Hawks would strike again. Sean Maguire passed to Connor Caverly for a 51-yard touchdown. Jake Lindsay added the extra point and created a 19-0 score.
Three minutes later, John Valentine would extend the Hawk’s lead 26-0 after running the ball into the end zone from two yards out.
With seconds left in the first quarter, Valentine rushed 50-yards for his second touchdown of the night.
At the 9:54 mark in the second quarter, Bryant scored the Hawks final touchdown of the game. Bryant carried the ball eight-yards into the end zone producing his third touchdown of the contest. Lindsay nailed the extra point and a 40-0 score.
“First off, I think the team we played is outstanding. I think it’ll be really interesting to see how they match up with Kennebunk next week. I think it’ll be a whale of a game. They’ve been on a hell of a run. For us to be where we want to be, that’s what we have to aspire to be like,” said Curit.
The Tigers (3-4) would not be shut out. With 4:06 left in regulation, sophomore Ashton Crowell carried the ball four yards into the end zone to create the final 40-6 score.
“Ashton’s going to be a very good quarterback, there’s absolutely no doubt about that. That touchdown was very simple. We just had to use our common sense,” said Curit.
Marshwood will host Kennebunk, while Biddeford will travel to Westbrook on Friday for the final week of the regular season.
“If we play well, I think it’s a game that we should obviously win. We’ve obviously had some guys get banged up so I don’t know what their availability will be like next week. If we’re undermanned, I think it will be hard for us to win,” said Curit.
