When I was 7 years old, my Nana was killed by cervical cancer. Almost her whole life, affordable healthcare was never available to her. It wasn’t until she got married and went under her husband’s insurance that she received her first routine gynecologist check up. At that point, it was too late for her, and she was diagnosed with Stage III cancer.
The worst part of her death was that it could have been avoided if she had gotten safe healthcare and information on safe sex before the cancer even started to grow. She would still be with us today. My family and I think about this often.
With Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court, I am afraid that what happened to my Nana and our family will happen to others. Judge Kavanaugh has ruled against the Affordable Care Act already. If he is confirmed, he will shift the balance of the court against the Affordable Care Act and more people will lose access to health care. Health care that saves lives — that could have saved my Nana.
Senator King has already said he will vote no on Judge Kavanaugh. I hope Senator Collins will do the same.
