BIDDEFORD — Herve J. Poissant, age 88 of Buxton, former longtime resident of Biddeford, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018 following a prolonged illness with Myasthenia Gravis at Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough with his family at his side.

He was born on Jan. 14, 1930 in Biddeford the son of Andre and Beatrice (Angers) Poissant.  Mr. Poissant was raised and educated in Biddeford and graduated from St. Francis College High School Class of 1949.  He received his BA from St. Francis College and continued on to receive an MA from Calvin Coolidge College of Liberal Arts, a MS IT from the University of Southern California and a BPH from the Seminary of Philosophy in Montreal, Canada.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy for six years.  He served two years as a Navy Corpsman and four years in the inactive reserves. He was honorably discharged.

Mr. Poissant worked at the University of New England as a Professor and Administrator for 49 years.  He retired in 1997.  He remained active in his retirement.  He had worked at the Americana and Aquarius Motels in Old Orchard Beach as well as for Hannaford Supermarkets in the area.  He worked until the age of 84.

He was a very active and social man who volunteered his time and treasure to numerous clubs and organizations in the area for many years.  The Franco-American Society was near and dear to his heart.  He was a devoutly spiritual man who had once attended the Seminary.  He was a member of the Church of St. Anne in Gorham and of St. Joseph and St Andre Churches in Biddeford.

Mr. Poissant loved his family and always put them first.  He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Madeleine and going to the racetrack from time to time. He always enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Madeleine T. (Boucher) Poissant and his children: Martine Daily, Daniel H. Poissant and wife, Teresa, Robert A. Poissant and wife, Debra, Rachel Poissant, Denise D. Perron and husband, Michael, Marie-Therese Bedard and husband, Shawn and Michelle Nicely and husband Lee, nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who also survive him.  He was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers.

Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018 at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford, ME 04005.  His funeral will begin at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2018 at the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Biddeford.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Biddeford.
