SANFORD — A strong first half led the Sanford field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over South Portland at Alumni Stadium on Wednesday night.
Kim Works scored two times in the first half to earn the lead for the Spartans (6-6).
Works’ second goal was assisted by Ruby LaChance.
With 6:11 left in the contest, the Red Riots (1-11) scored. Lydia Grant scored South Portland’s lone goal to create the final 2-1 score.
South Portland goalie Abbie Jellison had 17 saves. Sanford goalie Jordan Benvie had 12 saves in the win.
Sanford will travel to Gorham on Friday.
Biddeford 9, Portland 0
The Biddeford field hockey team rolled past Portland on Wednesday night.
The Tigers (11-0-1) scored six times in the first half.
Abby Allen recorded a hat trick, while Brooklyn Goff scored twice and Paige Laverriere had one goal in the opening half. Goals were assisted by Megan Mourmouras, Laverriere and Anna Lavigne.
During the second half, the Tigers scored an additional three goals.
Laverriere scored her second goal of the night. Jill McSorley and Jayme Walton also scored. Goals were assisted by Goff and Allen.
Portland goalie Jada Mcellwain stopped 23 shots in the cage. Biddeford goalies Taylor Wildes and Caitlin Goulet made a collective four saves in the win.
Thornton Academy 0, Gorham 0
The Thornton Academy and Gorham field hockey teams battled it out on Wednesday night and in the end the two teams would leave with a scoreless tie.
Thornton goalie Jenica Botting had three saves. Gorham goalie Lydia McCrillis had six stops in the cage.
Thornton will travel to Falmouth on Friday for their next game.
Girls Soccer
Saint Dominic 3, Old Orchard Beach 0
The Old Orchard Beach girls soccer team fell to Saint Dominic on Wednesday night.
During the first half, both teams battled it out but neither team could find the back of the net.
The Saints opened up the scoring 13 minutes into the second half when Emma Roy scored.
Lucy Frenette and Jessica Zimerman also scored for the Saints.
Old Orchard Beach goalie Kaitlin Halle had four saves. Saint Dominic goalie Hannah Kenney had nine saves in the win.
