BIDDEFORD — The Biddeford field hockey team scored a last-minute goal in the first half to take the lead and the Tigers would add another goal in the second half as they picked up a 2-0 victory over Sanford at Waterhouse field on Monday night.
“Sanford is always good. Diana (Walker) is a great coach. I knew they were going to come to fight and they really did,” said Biddeford head coach Caitlin Albert.
During the first half, both teams battled across the field having trouble finding the back of the cage until the last minute.
The Tigers (10-0-1) opened the scoring with 16 seconds left in the first half. Biddeford received a penalty corner at the 30 second mark and Brooklyn Goff would cash in as she took a pass from Abby Allen and scored to make it 1-0 at the break.
“Anytime you’re held 0-0 for a whole half, it becomes ‘at what point are you going to score?’ I think that with her scoring with 20 seconds left it helped us go into halftime with momentum and positivity that we needed because we were working hard, and so were they, so it was good to get on the upper hand off that,” said Albert.

The Tigers scored again with 16:59 left in regulation. Laverriere beat the Sanford goalie to give Biddeford a commanding two-goal lead.
“Paige weaved through people, saw the hole and then she lifted the ball and scored. She has such a good eye for the net. We’re very lucky to have her,” said Albert.
The Spartans (5-6) never got on the scoreboard but they did compete during Monday night’s matchup. With 15:33 left in the contest, Sanford got a breakaway and laid out a cross in front of the net but nobody was there to finish.
“We had our chances to score, we just missed which could have changed the outcome of the game. Biddeford’s a good team. They’re tough, they’re physical but I thought it was a well-played game by both teams,” said Sanford head coach Diana Walker. “I was very proud of my girls. I thought that they played strong, they played as a team and if we had played like this in any of the other games that we lost, this would be our first loss.”
Biddeford goalie Taylor Wildes finished with six saves in the win, while Sanford’s Jordan Benvie stopped nine shots.
With the Class A South playoffs on the horizon, both coaches believe this game had a positive impact on their team.
“Once we get into playoffs, this is a type of game you want to have had with a team like this so if we do come up against them, it’s not something where they were blown out. I think it will help them,” said Walker.
“Next week is the last game of the season and then playoffs so this week is very important for us because it is going into playoffs and hopefully we can carry this momentum into the playoffs,” said Albert.
Sanford will host South Portland, while Biddeford will travel to Portland on Wednesday.
