PORTLAND — Eric H. Tongren, age 63, died on Saturday, September 15, 2018, at Maine Medical Center. He was born on February 8, 1955, in Washington, D.C., the son of Hale and Sally Stetson Tongren.
Eric was a volunteer Docent for most of his life. He loved the mechanics of railroads and trains and had an impressive collection of photographs of actual trains. He had a great vocabulary and was a great reader. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and would always know the answers before anyone else.
Eric was a sweet man who loved animals and supported the Humane Society’s mission of treating animals fairly. He enjoyed going on car rides, especially appreciating the beauty of the back roads of Maine. When he would stop to eat at a local restaurant, he would always order a lobster roll.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, October 16 at 1 p.m. in the family lot at Tupper Cemetery in Topsfield, Maine.
Arrangements are by Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick, where memorial condolences may be expressed at stetsonsfuneralhome.com.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
