KENNEBUNK — The Noble golf squad’s perfect regular season was spoiled by a 7-6 loss to Kennebunk at Webhannet Golf Club on Thursday night — but it didn’t stop the Knights from claiming the division championship.
“We’ve had a great season. The thing I’m impressed with the most is three years ago, we didn’t have any wins. We were 0-10 and in the last couple years, the kids have put in so much time and energy and started to learn how to win,” said Noble head coach Geoffrey Howe. “Last year, we went 7-3, the year before 7-3, so this year was the first year we might have gone all the way 10-0 but we ended up going for 9-1 which is still a great season and it gives us the division championship. These kids work so hard, I am so stinking proud of them.”
Kennebunk head coach Patrick Moody also believed that the championship was the bigger prize.
“It’s a little bit bittersweet. They had a great season so even though we were able to win the match today, we didn’t win the ultimate goal which was to win our region and be able to play in the league championship — congratulations to them. Even though they lost today, they got the bigger prize,” said Moody.
While the Rams ruined the Knights’ hot streak, Geoffrey Howe fired the lowest round of the night with a round of 40.
Alex Champagne, Casen Luck and Cole Binette all generated victories for the Rams.
Both Champagne and Luck fired rounds of 42 to secure the Rams’ triumph.
“Scores weren’t great but I think the two teams competed and there was a lot on the line. There’s a lot of nerves and it’s easy to make mistakes when you’re nervous. I think both teams showed that, I don’t think either of us played our best match, but I thought both teams competed and that it was a good match,” said Moody.
Geoffrey Howe, Cheyanne Couture and Devin Brown picked up individual wins for Noble.
“Here’s the cool thing about tonight, I put a lot of pressure on my five and six seeds. Now here’s the thing, my five and six seeds are freshmen. These two freshmen came up and they won their matches and I’m so excited,” said Howe. “It was a very close match, it was almost a tie.”
