WATERBORO — A strong first half led the visiting Thornton Academy field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Massabesic on Wednesday night.
The Trojans (7-3) opened up the scoring at the 17:52 mark of the first half as Lily Stark scored off an assist from Cat Henaire.
Stark scored again with 8:45 left in the first half. She ripped one into the goal and produced a score of 2-0.
The Mustangs (2-7) changed the momentum of the game when they scored a goal in second half.
With 17:05 left in the contest, Brianna Stephenson scored the Mustang’s lone goal and created the final 2-1 score.
Massabesic’s goalie Madyson Pomerleau made four saves. Thornton’s goalies Madison Vachon and Jenica Botting made a combined 16 saves in the cage.
Massabesic will travel to Sanford and Thornton will host Biddeford today.
Boys Soccer 
Sanford 2, Portland 0 
The Sanford boys soccer team improved 4-5 on their season after a victory against Portland at Alumni Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Spartans opened up the scoring in the first half. Cole Randt scored off a deflection from Isaac Plante’s initial shot.
During the second half, the Spartans solidified their lead after Plante scored.
Portland’s goalie Henry Flynn made six saves. Sanford’s goalie Garrett Gallant made 16 saves in the win.
Girls Soccer 
Windham 3, Thornton Academy 2
The Thornton Academy girls soccer team fell behind 3-2 to the Eagles during the first half and the host Golden Trojans were unable to come back on Wednesday.
Two minutes into the first half, Thornton scored the first goal of the game. Hannah Niles shot in the upper corner of the goal to put Thornton on the board.
The Eagles answered the Trojans’ goal one minute later when Rylee Pepin tapped a ball into the corner of the net.
After Pepin’s goal, the Eagles would go on a scoring spree.
Eight minutes into the first half, Julia Mckenna assisted Meghan Hoffses with her first goal of the night.
With just under six minutes left in the first half, Hoffses scored her second goal off an assist from Caitlin Drouin.
With two minutes left, the Trojans responded as Kylie Bedard was 1-on-1 with the keeper, when she took a shot. The keeper made the save but Alyanna Beaudoin followed and finished the shot to produce the final 3-2 score.
During the second half, both teams battled but neither could find the back of the net.
Thornton goalie Grace Mears had nine saves. Windham keeper Riley Silvia had five saves in the win.
